چکیده

A phaeochromocytoma is a catecholamine-secreting tumour of the adrenal medullary cells of chromaffin origin. Approximately half of these patients are hyperglycaemic, t and nearly 50 per cent require insulin. 2 The management of phaeochromocytoma is by surgical excision of the tumour. The major intraoperative complications are severe hypertension, arrythmias and hypotension following removal. 3 Postoperative hypoglycaemia is a rare complication. 4 We report a case of protracted hypoglycaemia following surgical excision of a phaeochromocytoma.

Hypoglycaemia following removal of phaeochromocytoma: case report and review of the literature.

Hypoglycaemia may complicate removal of a phaeochromocytoma, but its pathogenesis is not well understood. The sixth such case in the world literature is reported together with details of glucose tolerance testing and hormone levels before and after extirpation of an adrenal phaeochromocytoma. The mechanism of hypoglycaemia probably relates to a sudden decrease in circulating catecholamines whic...

Perioperative hypertension in phaeochromocytoma patients undergoing adrenalectomy

This study was designed to compare perioperative blood pressure (BP) management in hypertensive patients with phaeochromocytoma undergoing preoperative α-blockade and in patients with other suprarenal gland tumors. Perioperative hemodynamic data and immediate postoperative outcome in two groups undergoing adrenalectomy were compared. 483 medical charts from urologic patients with tumors were an...

Nesidioblastosis of the pancreas: definition of the syndrome and the management of the severe neonatal hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia.

Three newborn infants are reported who developed severe non-ketotic hypoglycaemia (blood glucose less than 1.1 mmol/l; 19.8 mg/100 ml) within 6 hours of birth. All had inappropriately raised plasma insulin concentrations for the level of glycaemia, and required high rates of glucose infusion (less than 15 mg glucose/kg per minute) to prevent symptoms of hypoglycaemia. Medical treatment (hydroco...

An intrapericardial phaeochromocytoma.

A case history ispresented of a patient with symptoms of a phaeochromocytoma that could not, however, be located in the abdomen. She also had physical and radiological signs of mitral valve disease. After a laparotomy, cardiac investigations suggested the site of the tumour as retrocardiac. Operation confirmed this hitherto unreported site of a phaeochromocytoma, deforming a normal mitral valve...

Point-of-admission hypoglycaemia among under-five Nigerian children with plasmodium falciparum malaria: prevalence and risk factors

Abstract Background: Hypoglycaemia is a well recognized complication of falciparum malaria in children but its diagnosis may be overlooked because all the clinical features may be mimicked by severe malaria. To determine the prevalence of hypoglycaemia at the point of hospital admission of under-fives with falciparum malaria and identify its risk factors in patients seen in a Nigerian...
